Poignant Story of One Woman's Search for Love and a Child to Nurture

Told in a first-person narrative style by author Sondra Stateman, the reader is taken along on a journey of growth that begins with Stateman's desire to have a loving marriage and a child of her own. When all attempts to conceive fail, it leads to the adoption of a beautiful baby boy. Life then seems complete. But Stateman's life takes a cruel turn when her son, at the age of five, is diagnosed with a rare eye disorder called Choroideremia, a devastating condition that affects one in 100,000 boys and often leads to blindness.
As the years progress, we find Stateman falling into states of overwhelming anxiety, when she must cope with not only her child's fears but her own increasing health problems and a devastating miscarriage.
What Stateman writes about in That Which Does Not Kill Us Makes Us Stronger is the reality of life that she found, which, she says, has proved to be far more challenging, painful, and daunting than the life she envisioned. Though her book is her own personal chronicle, it deals with themes that are universal and takes us through what may be for most readers, familiar yet painful emotional ground.
Today Sondra Stateman is the President of the Choroideremia Research Foundation, a portion of the proceeds of her book will be donated to this charitable organization. Stateman lives in Palm Beach County, Florida, with her husband David, and works with clients through her coach practice, Positive Transitions.
